Between 1943 and 1944 Castellonorato was occupied by the German XIV Panzer Corps  and became an important military stronghold. Many local people fled in fear to the countryside and surrounding mountains.

Following long and difficult battles, heavy artillery fire and aerial bombardments the Allied forces finally succeeded in breaking through the Gustav Line near Castelforte on 13th May 44. However the Germans fought hard in retaliation and tenaciously held on to other nearby towns.

The attack did not go smoothly, but eventually on 15th May the tanks and infantry took over the German positions and under the cover of an airborne bombardment, following several hours of street fighting, finally took the town and cleared the village of the enemy.

The town was left badly damaged, the remains of some ruined houses are still visible today. After the war many people from the village were forced to move to the surrounding towns of Penitro and Santa Croce.
